The 2023 report is based on results of a survey conducted by Luminary Labs. We collected responses online from May 19 through July 6, 2023, from a select group of individuals who self-identified as responsible for running open innovation programs in their organizations.

In 2018, our landmark State of Open Innovation survey asked leaders in nearly 100 private sector, government, and nonprofit organizations to share how they are using open innovation — from co-creation, participatory design, and crowdsourcing to prize competitions, hackathons, and accelerators — in pursuit of new approaches to complex problems.
This year, we are conducting the survey again. In addition to updated data and trend analysis, the State of Open Innovation 2023 promises new insights into collaboration, outcomes, and investment in open innovation.
